***SUBMISSIONS CLOSED***

Ape Entertainment is announcing an open call for short comic book stories for their online UFO anthology. Submission Guidelines:

Content: Yup, you guessed it; a UFO must play a role somehow in your story! No UFO, no dice. Just having aliens in your story is okay, too. We’re open to all genres and settings. It doesn’t have to be modern day or even on Earth. Be creative. All stories must be self-contained. No unresolved cliffhangers. No flash fiction. No snippets of a larger story arc. Your story must have a beginning, middle and end.

Format: Please send us a short pitch (a few paragraphs) or a completed script. It can be written in prose, comic book format, or whatever style you feel comfortable with, as long as it’s easy for us to read. If your story has already been illustrated, that’s great, but if it has been previously published (online, print, or otherwise), please let us know.

Page Length: We prefer stories that are no longer than 15 pages. We’re not saying that your story should be exactly 15 pages long—only that you should try to avoid writing stories that are longer than 15 pages. If you have a lot less than 15, no problem.

Copyrights: Your story must be 100% original. This means that you are the copyright holder to your story. You will retain the copyright to your story, as you are only giving Ape the rights to publish your story online.

Deadlines: Since this is an online anthology, there aren’t any deadlines. There’s always the chance that someone will pitch your concept before you have a chance to, though, so sometimes sooner is better than later. Don’t rush it though. Take as long as you need to make it right. We’re not looking to fling a bunch of stuff against the wall to see what sticks. We want well written and entertaining stories.

Compensation: Unfortunately, we can not pay for your story. I really wish we could, but as an indie pub, there just isn’t enough money in comics, let alone online comics at this point. If you want to take this opportunity to add a nice piece to your art portfolio or writing resume, then this would be one way to do that.

Other Stuff:
We tend to see a lot of the same story concepts. For instance, the most common pitch we receive is the “alien invasion with a twist ending” routine. The twist is that we, human beings, are the nefarious invaders. If we’ve already approved a story that’s similar to yours, then we’ll have to take a pass. You may want to email us your pitch first (a few sentences or paragraphs describing your story) before writing out the complete script.

Note: Submitting your pitch or script does not guarantee it will be accepted. Sorry, but only the best stories will make it. Pitches that are accepted will move on to the scripting phase. Scripts that receive approval will then move on to the art production stage. If the completed art is not of professional quality, you’re story may be rejected at this stage, so chose your artist(s) wisely. Your story may be rejected at any point during the production process.

Writers are expected to find their own artist(s) for their story and vice versa. You can find collaborators here on this site, Digital Webbing, deviantART, Penciljack or a host of other sites where writers and artists hang out.

Please send your submissions to tdye@ape-entertainment.com. Please use “UFO Submission” as the subject of your email.

Thanks and good luck!

Thanks, Shawn. I had a fun time drawing this. Osmarco did a great job with the colours, too.
